The reopening comes at a sobering time for our community as we process the tragic death of Bikram Lama, an international student from Nepal. His death is a stark reminder of the vulnerability experienced by people without safe housing and underscores the critical role that homelessness services play in preventing harm and saving lives.
The Haymarket Foundation provides crisis accommodation and support services for people experiencing homelessness who also have complex conditions. They provide beds for women, men and transgender people over the age of 18, as well as support and advocacy to establish safe housing pathways for clients with a goal of long-term, independent living.
After a flooding event forced the closure of the Foundation, the City made a $3 million contribution to the new premises from our Affordable and Diverse Housing Fund.
We will keep calling on the Federal and State Governments to continue working with us and Community Housing Providers on more supported accommodation because it’s a model that works.
