Qtopia Sydney now open!

Congratulations to Qtopia Sydney, located in the former Darlinghurst Police Station, for creating a safe and inclusive space that celebrates, remembers, educates, and increases awareness of the rich history of Sydney’s LGBTIQA+ communities.

Qtopia Sydney now open!

Today I was delighted to join the Prime Minister, Premier and wonderful members of our rainbow community to open Qtopia Sydney – a new, permanent place that will showcase our inclusivity, vibrancy, and openness to the world.

It wasn’t that long ago that it would be inconceivable for leaders across levels of government to come together to open a space dedicated to LGBTIQA+ history.

Despite progress, the current threats of violence and intimidation targeting people of diverse sexualities and genders remind us there is more to do to and underscores the importance of Qtopia.

This week Council unanimously supported my call for the City to fund free admission to Qtopia on Sundays for 12 months – this will ensure everyone has a chance to visit and experience our newest cultural institution.

We are proud to have supported Qtopia since its inception, providing $283,000 in seed funding and a temporary home in the Green Park bandstand over the last year.
