Sustainable Sydney 2030–2050: Continuing the Vision sets the community’s vision for a city for walking, cycling, and public transport, with more public transport and zero-carbon vehicles and more people choosing to walk and ride bikes. To support this vision, Council adopted the Electrification of Transport in the City Strategy and Action Plan. The plan identifies the need for a small supply of on-street electric vehicle chargers to assist in lowering the barriers to electric vehicle uptake in the community. The Action Plan identifies the need to trial small-scale, on-street vehicle charging using low-impact technology on power poles.
In February 2023, the City facilitated the first trial of an on-street electric vehicle charger with Ausgrid and their supplier EVX at 75 St Johns Road, Glebe. Following this initial proof of concept, Ausgrid and EVX intend to install an additional nine electric vehicle chargers across the LGA in July 2023.
Similar to the proof of concept at 75 St Johns Rd, Glebe, Ausgrid and its partner EVX will install, manage and maintain the charger and power pole, with the chargers operating under a user pays model. The locations of the proposed charging stations were selected based on the identified EV charging infrastructure gaps. The proposed sites are:
- 16 Kent Street, Millers Point
- 12 Trinity Avenue, Dawes Point
- 55 Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont
- 8 Brown Street, Newtown
- 15 Carillion Avenue, Camperdown
- 3-19 Yurong Street, Darlinghurst
- 501 Glebe Point Road, Glebe
- 2 Huntley Street, Alexandria
- 3 Morley Avenue, Rosebery
