Making Sydney pet friendly!

For decades I have advocated for the welfare of companion animals and the rights of pet owners, including people renting and living in apartments.

Making Sydney pet friendly!

But to be a truly pet friendly city, we need the State Government to step up in three ways:

  • Urgently honour its commitment to allow pets in rentals, so fewer animals are abandoned – especially important given the rental crisis
  • Provide an update on plans to allow pets on public transport and
  • Allow dogs inside hospitality venues like cafes, bars and restaurants.

This week Council unanimously joined me in the above call, and directing our staff to investigate expanding access to subsided veterinary services for people on low-incomes and experiencing financial hardship and how we can educate people about responsible pet ownership.

Pets provide joy, comfort and companionship. I believe pets are critical to the wellbeing of many people, particularly those who live alone, and look forward to working with the Government on implementing these urgent changes.
