That canopy growth is the equivalent to an increase of almost 94 Sydney Cricket Grounds since 2008.
We have ambitious targets to increase canopy cover by 27% by 2050.
And we're the only capital city in Australia to have consistently increased its canopy cover. Even more remarkable is where the growth has happened. As of this year, we’ve more than halved the percentage of areas with less than 10% canopy cover, and more than doubled the percentage of areas with more than 30% canopy.
We are increasing the quantity and quality of our canopy as well as ensuring everyone benefits from the advantages that trees provide. This matters as one tree can cool its surroundings by up to 8 degrees and helps to reduce the hazardous impacts of heat.
Heatwaves kill more Australians than any other natural hazard and have been responsible for over 70% of extreme weather hospitalisations in the last decade.
